How fortunate we are to have such a network of friends! There is something extraordinary about Camp Friends, or as June and Pat would say, “Forever Friends.” No matter the distance, no matter the months or years that elapse, the common bonds we create through Camp transcend space and time. In fact, some of us were never physically at Camp together, yet we still connect in a deep, meaningful way because we share the experience of Camp, which uniquely unites us.
Alumna Kary J. wrote in her 2011 Vesper’s Speech:
“Around camp, I hear many describe their friendships as unlike any other they have. What is it about Wawenock that is so conducive to the formation of deep friendships? Of course, living as a group and sharing each moment of the day together creates unique bonds. Yet beyond that, I think our freedom here to try – and fail – and succeed, all apart from the pressures of the outside world, allows us to be ourselves in pure forms. Naturally then, we feel deeply connected with those who we feel understand and appreciate our true selves. It’s incredible that by doing what you love, those who truly love you seem to appear.
That’s why this week, I challenge all of you to be the you-est you can be around those you don’t know well. You may be surprised at who gravitates toward you, and who knows, it could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”
In September our Camp Family faced the loss of a dear friend, Pat Smith. As she was for many, Pat was an avid supporter of us professionally and personally. She was a master at building connections to understand each individuals’ needs, tailoring teaching moments, and inspiring people. Those of you who shared time at Camp with Pat will consider yourself fortunate to be among one of her Forever Friends. Though Pat, and numerous other Forever Friends, are no longer with us physically, they remain in our hearts and their impact on who we are as people will forever be woven into the tapestry of our lives.
In honor of all our Forever Friends, we can’t think of a better goal to begin the New Year than Kary’s challenge: Try to be the YOU-est you can be, even around those you don’t yet know well, and in time you will foster some beautiful friendships!
Though we don’t get to see each of you regularly, or even every summer, we think of you often and our bonds of connection through Camp remain. Friendship truly gives wings to the heart!
With love from Sebago,
