The Wawenock Camper Scholarship Fund strives to expand and enhance the camp experience by reaching a broader spectrum of children from diverse geographic, racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. The Camper Scholarship Fund began in 2004 when Wawenock partnered with the American Camp Association, a not-for-profit professional organization, to create the Camper Scholarship Fund.

Throughout the years, our scholarship campers have come to us through a variety of means. We have worked with the Lower East Side Girls Club in New York City, Prep for Prep in New York City, Focus for a Future in New York, Level Ground in Maine, and several private and public schools around the country for recommendations on girls who will both benefit from the experience and also be a good fit to positively contribute to our camp family. These partnerships have been very successful in helping us find campers who would otherwise be unable to afford the camp experience, and will also become an integral part of the camp family.
When we commit to a scholarship for a camper, it is our hope to be able to continue to offer the camp experience from year to year for her, because the longevity of the camp experience can have such a life-long impact on ALL girls!
Support of the Camper Scholarship Fund makes a big difference – not just to the girls who are able to attend on scholarship, but also to the whole camp family. The geographic, economic, cultural and ethnic diversity that is promoted through the Scholarship Fund enriches the camp experience for all. In the words of one of our campers, “The one thing that makes camp unique is the diversity. So many of my friends go to camps in places close to where I live. They go with the same group of friends they hang out with at school and don’t really expand their horizons which is something that Wawenock offers. At camp you can meet people from so many different places.”
We couldn’t possibly say anything more poignant than the message carried in the note we received from a Scholarship Fund recipient: “Camp has changed my life, and I am eternally grateful. At camp, I feel like I’m part of a big happy family, and I have made such amazing friends. I will never forget how kind everyone is at Wawenock. The experience has provided me with skills I will carry with me for life, like effort, respect, love of the natural world and so much more!”
