At Wawenock for the past few summers we’ve taken part in a statewide “Summer Earth Day” through Maine Summer Camps, a nonprofit organization that supports educational, recreational, environmental, and developmental experiences for children. For our summer earth day the Wawenock Green Team has led the camp family in a variety of projects, events, and skits helping us to appreciate and take care of the environment around us. One year each cabin group created a sculpture out of elements of nature, so today’s Camp activity is inspired by that. We’re suggesting you create a Nature Mandala!
Materials Required: Whatever access to outdoor space you have and the natural items you find there
How to Build a Nature Mandala: Mandala is a Sanskrit word that means “circle” and is a geometric design that contains a lot of symbolism in the Buddhist and Hindu cultures. There are lots of examples of nature mandalas on the internet if you need inspiration. Gather natural items and create a pattern that repeats, forming a circle shape. You could use leaves, rocks, dirt, sticks, sand, flowers, or grass, anything outside that you can find!
Happy Earth Day!
